Sony’s State of Play January 2024

Sony kicked off the new year with a bang by hosting its first State of Play event of 2024, showcasing over 15 games coming to PS5 and PS VR2. The 40-minute livestream was packed with exciting announcements, extended looks, and release dates for some of the most anticipated titles of the year. Here are some of the highlights and impressions from the event.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach

One of the biggest surprises of the show was the reveal of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the sequel to Hideo Kojima’s acclaimed 2019 game. The trailer featured Norman Reedus’ Sam Porter Bridges returning to a post-apocalyptic world where he faces a new threat called Drawbridge. The trailer also showed off some of the new gameplay mechanics, such as a chainsaw-guitar-hybrid weapon that shoots lightning, a jetpack, and a beach ball. The game will also star Lea Seydoux, Elle Fanning, Shioli Kutsuna, Troy Baker, and more. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is expected to release in late 2024.

Rise of the Ronin

Another major highlight of the show was the deep dive on Rise of the Ronin, the upcoming action game from Team Ninja. The game is set in feudal Japan, where players take on the role of a ronin, a masterless samurai who seeks revenge against the warlord who killed his lord. The game features 1-on-1 sword combat with a parry system, a hub world of Yokohama, and a variety of weapons and skills to customize your character. Rise of the Ronin is slated for release on March 8, 2024.

Stellar Blade

We also got a closer look at Stellar Blade, the action game from developer Shift Up and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game takes place on an apocalyptic Earth where a mysterious enemy has forced humans to flee to a colony. The main character Eve and her two companions, Adam and Lily, work to destroy mech-like enemies as well as hostile survivors. The game boasts stunning graphics, fast-paced combat, and a rich story. Stellar Blade will launch on April 26, 2024.
