Super Mario RPG Remake: Everything You Need to Know

What is Super Mario RPG?

Super Mario RPG is a classic role-playing game that was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1996. It was developed by SquareSoft (now Square Enix), the makers of the Final Fantasy series, in collaboration with Nintendo. The game features Mario and his friends teaming up with some unlikely allies, such as Bowser and a mysterious doll named Geno, to stop the evil Smithy from taking over the world with his army of weapons. The game is widely regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time, thanks to its charming characters, humorous dialogue, innovative gameplay, and memorable soundtrack.

Why is Super Mario RPG getting a remake?

After more than 25 years, Super Mario RPG is getting some official love from Nintendo. During the June 2023 Nintendo Direct, the company announced a remake of the cult favorite RPG for the Nintendo Switch. The remake will launch on November 17, 2023, and preorders are available now on the Nintendo eShop1.

The remake will re-imagine the original game in full 3D graphics, mostly maintaining the original characters’ designs and proportions. The game’s soundtrack will also be rearranged with new orchestration by the original game’s composer, Yoko Shimomura2. The remake will be developed by ArtePiazza, a studio associated with Square Enix and known for their work on remaking entries in the Dragon Quest series3.

What are the new features and changes in the remake?

The remake will largely keep the gameplay systems of the original Super Mario RPG intact: playtime will be split between exploring the world via isometric 3D platforming and turn-based combat encounters. You’ll still battle with three characters at a time from its playable roster of five: Mario, Bowser, Peach, Geno, and Mallow. Fighting will still be initiated by bumping into enemies.

However, the remake will also introduce some new features and changes to enhance the experience. Here are some of the highlights:

Action Gauge

Successful Action Commands (timed button presses during attack or defense actions — a staple of the original game) will now fill an Action Gauge. Perfectly timed attacks will result in damage being done to all enemies. When the Action Gauge reaches 100%, you can perform a powerful, three-person attack. The specific attack will vary based on the combination of characters in your party — each possible grouping will have a unique Triple Move4.

Monster List

A Monster List has been added to the remake. The list fills up by fighting monsters and includes information on their status and weaknesses. This will help you plan your strategy and learn more about the enemies you encounter.

Post-game Content

The remake will feature post-game content, including the ability to rematch bosses. According to Nintendo, these rematches are only available “if certain conditions are met after the ending”. You’ll be able to challenge stronger versions of some bosses and test your skills. The remake will also include a Music Player, a Play Report, and a Scrapbook, where you can view your achievements, stats, and memories from the game.

Easy Mode

A new way to play Super Mario RPG, Easy Mode is for those looking for a casual and relaxing experience. Nintendo notes this mode changes nothing about the story and can be adjusted mid-game. Easy Mode will reduce the difficulty of battles and puzzles, and provide more hints and guidance.
